Quick Trip to Tulum, Mexico

Date February 18, 2008 by karen

Last week Alex and I headed to Tulum, Mexico for a quick trip before he started his new job. I’ve never planned a trip like that in less than two weeks from the departure date, but it worked out really well. It felt like we booked it and then we were off!

Tulum is about an hour and a half south of Cancun, so we rented a car and headed down the highway to our hotel. A few miles in, after reaching pretty high speeds, we realized Mexico likes to place nearly unmarked speed bumps mid-highway. So, that’s what the booby looking signs are for… they could have at least painted these killer launching pads a bright color.

When we booked our hotel, it seemed like it was one of two places that had an vacancy left, so we weren’t sure what to expect, but it turned out to be quite nice.

We spent the first couple of days lounging on the beach, reading, swimming, playing bocce, ping pong and shuffle board, (can someone tell us how to play correctly?) eating and drinking.

Everyone who knows me well, knows that I have a terrible fear of being outdoors in lightening storms. But you haven’t seen anything until you see what I am like when I think a tornado is approaching the beach. This funnel turned out to be a water funnel, not nearly as scary as a tornado, but when you live on the East Coast most of your life, it’s hard to tell the difference.

Twister on the way!

A couple of days into the trip we made our way to the Tulum ruins which were really incredible. It’s amazing what people were able to build before power tools. The ruins are right on the coast of the Caribbean.

On one of our final nights we were invited to a Mexican Fiesta. It turned out to be super fun with a mariachi band and delicious mexican food, which I can never get enough of. I ate no fewer than eight churros and Alex got to wear the lead singer’s sombrero.

It turned out to be a perfect quick mid-Winter getaway. We came home a little fatter, a little tanner and definitely a lot more relaxed.
