Alex’s Resolutions for 2008

Date February 18, 2008 by alex

This post was started in early January and due to a bunch of things (wrapping up old job, vacation, starting new job), didn’t see the light of day until today.

Last year I found that writing down some goals for the year gave me some focus, I’m going to do the same thing for this year.

There are a few goals that are getting carried over since they weren’t, ahem, fully realized in ‘07 so I’ll start with those and then tack on a few new ones

Get down to 200 pounds and stay there.
After successfully completing 30 x 30, I was caught off guard a bit by the fact that Marathon training actually resulted in me putting on weight. Alas, all those post-long run sausage and eggplant pizzas seem to have taken their toll. The good news is I’m back on track in the new year having gotten to the gym 3-4 times every week since Jan 1. Now that my knees seem to be a bit better recovered from the marathon, I’m getting the itch to train for and run more races but I think I’ll have to go for something a little less physically demanding than a marathon - at least a good relay and best case scenario: a half marathon.

Make a couple of movies
Not the big, serious kind, silly! (and not the dirty kind, either) Home movies. Karen and I got a video camera before our wedding and ended up taking a ton of footage but never did anything with it. My goal this year is to learn a bit of Final Cut Express and try and make a semi-coherent narrative of that footage, along with one more that I’d shoot this year. This goal is loosely derived from the “Take A Class” goal from last year.

Blog more
I’d like to try and flex some of my writing muscles a bit more by posting more regularly to our blog to diversify the content a bit. I’m not going to get too attached to the traffic numbers but I’d like to see a general upward trend by the end of the year. I will also be launching a more professionally-focused blog called…

everydayux.com
Doing Take One A Day last year was a great exercise but I wanted to figure out something new for this year (and beyond) so I’m going to start a blog that documents successes and failures in Product Design, Interaction Design, Signage, Communication, etc. This will be a great reason to keep the taking the camera everywhere, will add a little focus to the photos and give me an opportunity to write a bit more about what drives me professionally which can’t be a bad thing, right? If you want to read a great little piece that sums up why all this stuff fascinates me, check out this post called The Long Wow.

Finish the Basement
This is more of a team goal but I’m going to put it here anyway. This will be our first major home improvment project since we moved in last July. The prospect of having a finished basement is very exciting to me. Once we get going, we’ll be sure to post updates on the site.

That should keep me busy and I can certainly add to the list if the need arises. Stay tuned!
