Thanksgivicopia or How our quest to deep fry a turkey will remain unfillfilled.

Matt and Freya hosted their annual Thanksgiving event a few weeks back and one of the big stars was supposed to be a deliciously deep-fried turkey. A few weeks prior, Matt approached us and the following conversation ensued:
Matt: “Hey can my mom come over to your apartment to deep fry a turkey in your backyard?”
Me: “Sure… but don’t you guys have a backyard?”
Matt: “We totally do but the process can be pretty unsafe so we don’t think our landlord would go for it.”
Me: “Um.. sure.”
So when the day was upon us, Matt and his mom showed up with a carful of equipment.
First we had to load it up with some good old fashioned oil. Yum!
Then we had to get the propane tank all hooked up. Matt couldn’t be more proud.
The oil went on at 2:30pm and we were now officially waiting for the oil to boil.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Matt’s mom is treating that turkey like its Keith Richards.
On a side note, is there anything grosser than the strange neck-piece that makes up the gizzards in a turkey?
I took this event as an opportunity to test out an awesome recipe for Mac and Cheese in the Baker’s Edge. (Have a nerdy food-obsessed person in your life? Get them one of these for the holidays. Its really an excellent piece of equipment.)
Back to the turkey! To make a long story short, the oil never get close to the necessary temperature of 300 degrees. So after nearly 4 hours of heat, we pronounced the mission a failure and decided to pull the plug and head over to Matt’s with my mac+cheese.
Matt and Freya once again orchestrated an epic feast (where they manage to serve 50 people and yet outsource all of the turkey cooking). This is a snapshot of the dessert table. Not pictured: Karen’s Tea Time Tasters which proved to be a big hit.
