Training + Six-Eight Black Men
July 31, 2007 by karen
Since we’ve started training I have literally listened to the same mix that I made for NYE at Union Hall for every run. So lame, I know. I’m tired of it, but when I remember to make a new mix, I get too lazy to follow through. So last week I decided to download a book, but came across the David Sedaris show at Carnegie Hall and downloaded that instead.
I thought listening to books while running would be a great way to get through some of the longer runs, but what I have learned is that humor books or recordings are probably not the best. I laughed at least five or seven times for each of his stories, and literally almost non-stop when I heard Sedaris read Six to Eight Black Men. The lady on the treadmill next to me was obviously pretty uncomfortable with my guffaws, as she had no idea why I was laughing and I am sure I resembled someone with a laughing disorder, especially as I almost fell down once. Laughing + running is not a good combination.
I remember reading that same story on the plane back from Paris a couple of years ago, another time when you probably shouldn’t be frequently laughing aloud–it seems to make people nervous, and I laughed pretty hard back then too. I definitely recommend it if you haven’t read it, but maybe while sitting and not in a public place. If you have other suggestions for books that might work better for running, please send your recommendations my way.

a laughing disorder? haven’t heard of that one.
