Magic Beans

I picked up some of these Jelly Belly Sport Beans last week at our local running store, while waiting for Alex to ask the sales associates about his knees (because he trusts them more than his doctor apparently). I’ve tried some other sport bars and gels before races with mixed success. In general, they never taste very good, but they can definitely give you a boost before a big run. When I spied these Sport Beans sitting on the counter, I figured why not?
It turns out they are awesome. They don’t taste as great as regular Jelly Bellys, but they still taste better than many of the sport goos and gels I have tried. I threw a few back with a glass of water and Sasha and I hit the park for one of the best runs I can remember in a long time. I felt great and I could have kept going for another loop. I forgot about the magic beans until a few days later when Alex told me he had a few beans that were left from my pack before a run one morning and ran so much further than usual that he ran himself a blister. Are these things made of steroids? The package says electrolytes and carbs, but I am not entirely convinced.
With our upcoming race at Bear Mountain this weekend, we’ve since stocked up on every flavor…like a couple of junkies.

I was in that very store yesterday, and marveled briefly at the wide selection of energy un-foods. I must say I’m a little skeptical of the recent explosion in the market of energy bars, gels, powders, beans, plasmas, and dark-matters-imported-from-the-12th-dimension. There’s something very soylent green about the whole deal. That said, I do sort of like the idea of innovative nutrient delivery systems, and if they can provide clean energy w/o invoking a gag reflex, I’ll have to check them out. My only concern is that if this stuff is as kick-ass as you say that I’d end up over doing it and wake up with planks for legs the next day. Is there a gel for that?
Good luck at Bear Mountain guys. Hope you don’t get disqualified for doping.
