Derby Spoils

TOAD: May 5th, 2007: Saturday was Derby day and Karen and I continued our tradition of going to Floyd to watch the race. We got there about an hour before post time so I had plenty of time for my customary Mint Julep (SUPER sweet this year) and a slice of Derby Pie (a pecan, bourbon + chocolate pie that blew me away. FYI, Sweet Melissa’s makes a similar one if you get a hankering on a day other than Derby day.) Karen and I had made a few bets at OTB earlier in the day but our main picks were Street Sense (for Karen) and Any Given Saturday (for me). We also partook in Floyd’s Derby raffle and Karen managed to get Street Sense again. The stars were aligning. As you all know, Street Sense made a remarkable run weaving his way from 18th to the front of the pack and Karen went home with an extra $75. Woo! We celebrated by picking up some clam bake staples (lobster, clams and shrimp) and serving them up on the grill - messy but delicious. Thank you, Street Sense!
