Babies and Tacos

TOAD: February 3rd, 2007: On Saturday night, Karen and I shuttled over to Greenpoint for a few hours to babysit for our nephew, Kota, while Jeff and Chieko went out to dinner for her birthday. This was my first time on extended babysitting duty (for an actual baby - when I was younger I paid my dues as a babysitter for slightly older kids) so this was a new experience for me. As you can see from the photo above, Kota’s pretty cute and this little Baby Bjorn harness is really a lifesaver - he almost immediately calms down when he gets strapped in there and it frees up your hands to do whatever you want.

I did notice that he shared some attention-hungry behaviors with Sasha (my only previous experience “rearing” anything) in that he would cry when he could see you but if you dissapeared out of his field of vision, he’d calm down and entertain himself. Anyway, he was fun to take care of and not too much work. Karen and I would essentially take turns passing him back and forth, entertaining him and waiting for him to tire out and fall into nap mode. In 2-3 hour bursts every few months, I bet this whole raising a child thing isn’t that bad!

Afterwards, Karen and I stopped by Marisa and Vinny’s new apartment (huge with great amenities like a washer/dryer, ceiling fans and a roaring electric fireplace!) in Greenpoint and grabbed some mexican food at a place called Taco Chulo on Grand St. for some tacos and drinks. The service was a bit slow and we managed to nab the table closest to the drafty door but the food was excellent and my grapefruit margarita was delicious.
