(This is the first in an ongoing series of products that I have found to be executed in a particularly profound way. I will call them Alex’s All Star Products. It doesn’t have the same ring as JD Power and Associates, does it?)

For a few years now, I’ve seen the Chuckit swell in popularity with dog owners while I looked on and thought “I can throw a ball pretty far on my own. I don’t need some sort of prosthetic ball-throwing device. I am a man, am I not?” The same company makes the flying squirrel, a toy that Sasha loves and has proven to be well designed and durable. Last week I finally caved and decided to give it a shot and man or not, these things are sweet.

The Chuckit is a simple piece of molded plastic that creates extra torque that enables you to hurl your tennis ball what seems like a country mile with very little effort. What I didn’t realize as I watched from the sidelines is that this makes your dog run at least 3 or 4 times as far for each one of your tosses which, for city dog owners, goes a long way towards getting your dog their proper excercise. Another fringe benefit (especially during the wet season) is that you no longer have to handle the (often wet and muddy) tennis ball with your bare hands - the Chuckit! lets you easily scoop the ball up while barely bending over. The only drawback I can see so far is that its slightly awkward to carry, especially if you’re someone who usually walks your dog with a warm coffee in hand.

Pros:

  • Cheap
  • Stunningly simple and efficient design
  • Makes you feel superhuman
  • Keeps your hands clean
  • No bending down for the ball

Cons:

  • Awkward to carry
  • Would be cooler if you could throw it that far with your bare hands

Solution to one con: get Karen to make you a sling, so you can carry it strapped to your back like people do with yoga bags.
