Bachelor Party Weekend at Mt. Snow

Date August 9, 2006 by alex

On the weekend of Aug. 3rd, a bunch of us (Dennis, Gabe, Kevin, Nuti, Oliver, Matt and Manlio) went up to Vermont to celebrate my Bachelorness. After work on Thursday, 6 of us met up in midtown to pack up the Pilot and the Rover and head up to Dennis’ parents’ house in Mt. Snow.

[Thursday]

We decided to forgo Mohegan Sun as it would require us to deal with the dreaded I-95 and result in us probably dropping $100 just to get into Vermont too late to have some beers. Instead we shot up 87 (sweet), with only two stops: one for Oliver to pick up beans and rice from Popeye’s and another to grab some 30 packs at the convenience store before we pulled in.

Because I drive like a senior citizen, Dennis was able to gain about 45 minutes on us so he, Kevin and Oliver stopped to stock up on groceries for the house. In an amazing turn of synergy, Dennis caught up to us in the Pilot right as we got to said convenience store 5 minutes from our destination. What made it even more crazy was that Nuti (he of no cellphone in case of emergency) pulled in no less than 5 minutes after we got to the house proclaiming that Dennis had concocted the best directions he ever done followed. Now that everyone was there for the night it was time to get some beer drinking and burger eating in.

[Friday]

What we thought would only be a couple of hours of drinking turned into a 4 am session. The next day (Friday) was about relaxing. The first surprise of the morning was that Manlio arrived just in time for breakfast having made the journey from San Francisco on the red-eye to JFK and then rented a car and made the 5 hour drive up the Vermont. He was operateing on no sleep and would continue to do so for a really amazing amount of time. The Manlio nap countdown had begun.

After our monstrous breakfast, we went to go check out the hotel pool nearby. We rolled in 6 deep and were asked “Are you staying at the hotel?” by the nice girl manning the pool area. Gabe answered “Yes” and when asked what room he responded with a trailing off “um… Dennis knows the number…” and continued to walk right on by. After about an hour in the water, we decided to head back to the house for Miller Lite and horseshoes.

We found ourselves with a ferfectly round number of people for an intense King of the Hill-style game of horseshoes. We divvied up into 4 teams and things got underway.

Check out the form

Occaisionally when a team would lose, they’d be asked to shotgum a beer. Delicious.

While Kevin and Dennis’ team was betwixt matches, Dennis (and a little Kevin) were shredding it on the pipe that they had worked to repair earlier in the morning.

Mid shred action shot!

Bo knows shredding.

Bo knows...

After a few hours of horseshoes we cleaned ourselves up to go to Dinner at a place Dennis’ Dad had really nicely scoped out for us, The West Dover Inn. Our waitress, after hearing we were there to celebrate me getting married, told us that she was married up until 5 months ago when her husband up and left her for someone he met on Yahoo Messenger… as we waited for the punchline all we heard was…. crickets. She was dead serious! Not knowing how to volley the conversation back to her, we told her that our friend Manlio at the end of the table works at Yahoo.

The Dinner Crew

During the meal, we could hear the Live Music coming from the singer at the front of the bar. He literally played all the songs you would think he’d play. So much so that we attempted to predict what the songs would be and were relatively successful. After the big meal was finished, we headed back to the house, not before Dennis and Kevin tricked Oliver into thinking they had left him behind. This caused Oliver to sulk in the car while we stocked up at 7-11.

This guys played them all

Once we got back to the house we really flexed our competitive drinking muscles with spoons, Beirut and some Asshole. Matt’s Beirut form was something to be reckoned with. The night went on until the light started to come out on the mountain and Matt hearalded the end of the evening with what we will call a “silent manual deposit”.

[Saturday]

I wake up on Saturday covered with a skeevy Red Sox rug and Gabe snapping photos. It’s paintball day! Sadly it’s also the day that Kevin has to leave us to head back to the city in Manlio’s car (a plan hatched by Gabe and I to accomodate both their abnormal schedules: Manlio drives the car up and kevin drives it back. it fealt more brilliant at the time). Kevin had to get back to NY, get to a wedding saturday night and then head to Japan with his family sunday morning. After a copious breakfast at Dot’s, where Oliver was smitten by our British waitress Cassie, we headed off to go shoot some paint at each other.

Oliver's best friend, Cassie

After watching the saftety video (these paintballs are a. bigger than I expected and b. travel at 290 feet/second which is really, really fast in my mind) Luckily we were slated to take on four 14 year old guys and their three 10 year old sisters. Haha. Just kidding! They *destroyed* us. Paintball proved to be a great activity, despite how outgunned we were.

Pretty tough

By the time we got back from Paintball, played some more horsehoes and cooked up a meat-iful dinner, we decided to just “take a rest” on the couch and watch TV for a bit before we dug into the 2 *new* 30 packs we had picked up on the way home. It turns out we were much more tired than we though and we spent the rest of the night watching The Devil’s Advocate in Spanish, passing in and out of sleep, eating ice cream sandwiches and using the wonders of the internet to look into what some of our childhood TV crushes have been up to (all I remember was Winnie Cooper. when I woke up the next morning I heard Evie from Out of this World also made an appearance). We joked about how our significant others would never buy that this was how we spent our evening. Well, it was.

[Sunday]

We woke up Sunday mroning to make another huge breakfast, clean the house and get on the road. All in all it was the perfect weekend with everything I could have asked for. I’m really lucky to have the friends that I do.

if i recall correctly the final tally for the manlio nap countdown was 15 hours. and by that time i had been awake for 42 hours total, which would at least partially explain why i was playing beirut at the end like a blind man with no motor control. well, that and the 15 beers.
