Second Half baseball predicitons…

Date July 13, 2006 by alex

Now that we’re entering the second half of the season, what do we think will happen. An email containing FOX’s predictions became a thread containing all of our predictions. I will paste them here for posterity (and gloating rights come October).

Manlio’s:
Those are all good questions. I think:

1. the AL east comes down to the wire, but boston wins
2. Detroit outlasts Chicago, but both go to the playoffs
3. The A’s win the west
4. The Mets win the NL east
5. The dodgers take the NL West
6. The Cards and Reds come out of the central

Leading us to a 20 year anniversary Boston/mets WS, in which pedro hits
Jason varitek, and a coco crisp diving catch of a david wright line drive
(eerily the same play that happened a few weeks ago), clinches it for boston

Gabe’s:
Check this shit out, ho’s:

1. The AL east comes down to the wire, boston finally wins the east, NY
slides in the WC (more on this in point 2)
2. Both Detriot and Chicago are going to crumble - Detroit drastically.
Chicago will hang and win the central, Detroit will disappear and fail to
make the playoffs, Yanks slide in a game ahead of them in the WC race.
3. A’s win the west, but by a hair, LA streaks in the 2nd half, vlad
takes the team on his back again, and the pitching gets red hot, they are
the best team of the 2nd half (just ahead of the Twins). It won’t be hot
enough, and the A’s hold on by a game.
4. Mets win the NL east
5. Dodgers take the NL West (nice one, Manlio, high five)
6. The Cards make a move for another starter and win the Central, Reds
take the WC (another high five).

I’m not ready for WS predictions yet, I’m feeilng too swayed by your
Sox/Mets 20 year reunion madness. More to come on that later.

Alex’s:
Here come mine…

1. Red Sox Win the division by 3+ games.
2. Chicago takes the central and the Tigers take the WC. They will both lose steam but they’ll hold on. Kenny Williams will make a smart trade here.
3. This will be the tightest of the 3 races I think and honestly I could even see Texas making it. Fuck it, I’ll go Anaheim/Texas/Oakland. That’s so dumb. (I really want to say Texas takes it)
4. Mets crush the East.
5. Dodgers eek it in the West.
6. The Cards get a bat and take the central with the Astros winning the WC.

I see the Mets, as presently constituted, potentially losing to the Astros (or Cards) in the playoffs. They NEED another starter really badly.

That would set up Mets/Stros (rematch from the 80s and if they win, going through the Dodgers would be, too) + Cards/Dodgers (nice classic teams)

In the AL it would most likely set up White Sox/Anaheim and Red Sox/Tigers. I would take White Sox/ Red Sox and the Red Sox to the Series.

The NL is tougher for me (I have realized recently that I am decidedly less familiar with the NL West than any other division in baseball) I would go Mets and Dodgers (Brad Penny was a STUD at the All Star game) with the Mets taking it (chic pic).

Setting up Mets + Red Sox (bittersweet for Yankee fans. on the one hand its the worst case scenario because one of your 2 biggest rivals will definitely win but at least you can console yourself with the other one losing.

Pedro vs. Schilling in game 1 (can you feel the excitement! - Pedro comes up huge in this one)

And the winner is…

I have a hard time deciding before I see what moves they make but I’ll go with the Mets (again) in what would be a great Series.
