Gabe’s Birthday + DS Lite and Elijah Wood: what a weekend!

Date June 12, 2006 by alex

Gabe’s 30th Birthday Party at Loreley was a rollicking good time and Sunday was spent being hungover, playing my brand new delicious Nintendo DS Lite and hosting an open house at our apartment.

Saturday night Karen, Kevin, Oliver and I went out for some French food at Bar Tabac and then headed into the city to celebrate Mr. Gabe’s 30th birthday. The venue was a familiar one: Loreley and the result was also familiar: 200 beers consumed. We had a great turnout downstairs and Karen, Gerald, Amir, Kevin and I Dj’ed it up a bit and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. To be frank, the end of the evening is a little foggy but through the fog I can certainly see my fair share of excellent times.

Sunday started off with a crippling hangover. Karen and I got it together just in time to get the apartment in order before our open house. On Friday night we had put an ad on craigslist describing our little apartment and the responses we got were overwhelming. So much so that 20 minutes before the scheduled beginning of the Open House, there were 10 people waiting on our stoop. Among those 10 people was none other than Frodo Baggins, Mr. Elijah Wood, who was there to support a friend of his looking at the apartment. Elijah and friends stayed for quite some time and we spoke about how awesome Guitar Hero is and how nice it is to be able to eat a bowl of cereal in your garden (we told him we were moving because we wanted some outdoor space). All in all, he was really nice to talk to. Thanks for coming by Elijah! By the end of the 2 hour Open House we had 17 filled out applications. People really seemed to love the ol’ place (sniffle). This was after a realtor had the listing exclusively for a week and only managed to *show* it to 3 people. We pulled in 17 applications in 2 hours - take that, real estate industry! (it’s also easy to rent an apt. sans fee but whatever!)

The other big development was picking up a new DS Lite at Gamestop. Boy is this a pretty little device. Everything about it is so refined and slick. It is also a joy to play New Super Mario Bros. - really brings me back to the 80s when Mario games defined a generation. It’s great to see that Nintendo knows how to tap into that nostalgia and continue to deliver great Mario games. Anyway, more on that later but for now just know that if you are a casual or a hard core gamer, your quality of like will increase by picking up one of the snow white little things.
