4 more with Beantown

Date June 5, 2006 by alex

Alas, we find ourselves coming back to Yankee Stadium to play 4 more games against our beloved Boston Red Sox, who roll into town with a half game lead on us for the division. In all this Yankee/Red Sox banter, we can’t forget Toronto, who despite losing barely getting to test the water of A.J. Burnett’s $55 million dollar contract, are lurking really close and some may say, are in better (healtier) shape than either of our teams. A lot remains to be seen but they look to make this a non-100 victory division and could even make it up for grabs if the Yankees continue to have injury woes and the Red Sox can’t solve their 4/5 starters and their non-Papelbonian bullpen members.

Interesting side note: Curt Schilling endorses (gulp) Joe Torre for Manager of the Year. What about Tito?!

Onto this week’s series. I present to you the matchups…

Beckett vs. Mussina
Pauley vs. Wang
Schilling vs. Wright
Wakefield vs. Johnson

Interesting matchups… Beckett is in a big spot tonight with Pauley going Tuesday - more pressure than usual I would say. Luckily for him, the Yankees continue to be without Matsui and Sheffield and could also be without Jeter and Giambi tonight. Luckily for the Yankees, they have their best starter on the hill but unfortunately I think I still give the nod to Beckett and the Sox offense. As for the official predictions:

Game 1: Sox win, 5-2
Game 2: Yanks win 7-4 * Though this is a classic “trap” game with Pauley starting. If we pull it out tonight, I say we lose tomorrow. If Beckett wins, we take Tuesday night.
Game 3: Sox win 6-4
Game 4: Yanks win 5-4

So there you have it. I’m calling a split (surprise!). After this week, our two teams will only have 8 games left against each other all (regular) season and don’t meet again until mid-August for a FIVE game set in Fenway (thank you rainout!). Let’s hope we can pull it together this week and show them we’re gonna hang around all summer and hopefully the next time we see them, we’ll have a few old (and maybe new?) faces to greet them with.

ps: the Manny meaningless game situation plunk-watch continues…

Oh my god, i can’t believe this, i’ve lost my mind. As I gear up to make my pics, i had a revelation - by some freak occurrence, the sox are going to sweep this series. Now i think I (and Alex and Manlio) have come a long way in achieving an understanding that our thoughts and fantasies don’t effect the outcome of major league baseball games. And this gut feeling i’m having is probably grounded in nothing, but both teams are pretty banged up (w/ all the yankee woes including shef, mo, jeter, giambi, a-rod, i believe both lowell and youkilis are questionable tonight at least, and we will be timlinless this series as well - ugh), and as alex mentioned our bullpen aside from freakelbon is suspect all around. It would be logical to assume a split here, and w/ maybe one exception (game 3 of this series)every game will be decided by the bullpen. and by some miracle, i think we’re even going to win even the travis pauley game. Predictions:

Game 1 - Beckett vs. Mussina: 8-4 Sox
Game 2 - Pauley vs. Wang: 10-8 Sox
Game 3 - Schilling vs. Wright: 3-1 Sox
Game 4 - Wakefield vs. Johnson: 6-2 Sox

Seriously, these are the dumbest predictions i think i’ve ever made, but like steve colbert says, i have to trust my gut.

Ha. I love how Gabe doesn’t even get Pauley’s first name right.

i can’t believe that you are predicting a sweep after calling me out on it the last 2 times.

does his first name really matter? this is the last we’ll be seeing of him…

manlio, i know, but when the gods speak you have to heed their call…
