Do it for the Mommas!

This weekend was the Spring bocce tournament at Floyd on Atlantic Avenue. Our team, Watch Your Balls!!, had a not so awesome record of 2-6 going into the playoffs. Last week we kicked off the tournament when the team we were supposed to play didn’t show up. We love forfeits! The remaining part of the playoffs finished this past weekend.

We started Saturday at Noon anticipating a tough match against the usually awesome team, The Sweet Meats. They pleasantly started off the match by asking if they could play with just three players (you need four according to the rules) because the rest of their team had some trouble showing up. We were informed that their (not present) Captain, Tom, “really wants to play tomorrow” as though just showing up secures your team’s position in the next round. You guys are good, but you’re not that good. Luckily they had a fourth player show before the match started. We were three players short ourselves starting this weekend’s games, so Sara, Matt, Alex and myself took the court and smoked the Meats, so to speak. We took the match 7-0 and 7-1. A sweet win indeed.

After a carb-fueled breakfast with the Alex’s Mom and Omi on Sunday morning, we returned to Floyd on Sunday to carry on the playoffs. Before we started the day’s matches we decided in honor of Mother’s Day we would play for all the Mommas out there (particularly our own) and gave ourselves some nice sharpie tattoos. Our first game against the always friendly Notorious BRF ended with a victory. Yay! Go us! With a four hour break, some of us ate, some of us napped, some of us did some crosswording and one of us rearranged his Mother’s Day dinner plans so he could stay for the next game at 5:30. “Honestly, when I made the reservations, I didn’t think we would make it this far in the tournament.” he finally admitted. Neither did anyone else, Matt. No worries.

As we went into the semi-finals, Daya showed up to give us a hand against the zen master team, Boccelism. They beat us in the first game 7-1, but we battled back from a 5-1 defecit in the second game to take it 7-5 after an inspiring moment provided by Toto’s “Africa.” Our last game sadly ended with Boccelism eeking it out 7-5. We put up a great fight.
The finals match came down to The Old Dirty Barristers and Boccelism. Boccelism won in the end, and we went home with some sweet tattoos and a sleepy puppy.

Special thanks to Sara for some of these photos.
