Microsoft carjacks Sony
May 10, 2006 by alex
Microsoft surprised many at E3 yesterday by announcing that the follow-up to Sony’s (once) flagship franchise, Grand Theft Auto IV, will be appearing on both the Xbox360 and the Sony Playstation 3 at the same time (*next* October 17th, 2007) instead of the customary 6-12 month period of exclusivity Sony once held. Also note that GTAIV will run on a completely new engine (not the one used for III, Vice City and San Andreas) This franchise was one of the main reasons people bought PS2s over the past few years and Microsoft has pulled off a minor coup in taking away that advantage. For those of us (I was one of them) for whom GTA was a huge lure to the PS3, you might have cause to re-consider. In this age of game development overrun with sequels and cross-platform franchises, games like this will ultimately make the difference in the upcoming console wars. Microsoft might now have the highest profile exclusive franchise, Halo. Good use of all that money, Bill!
