At least we can agree on something…

Date May 9, 2006 by alex

This guy is absolutely ridiculous. I had to follow him up and down the block until I could get a clear shot of him and all his stupidity.

I mean you have to assume this is custom made because its just too stupid for a company to produce a lot of these. Regardless of whether it is custom made, what could possbily be the rationale behind it? “I have no opinion on anything and I just like to be an idiot and a pain in the ass to all of my friends” is the best I can come up with. All this on the morning of the first series at home against the Red Sox. Grr…

Tonight we kick off the second round of games between these two teams and the pitching matchups could not be sweeter for the series:

Johnson vs. Beckett

Mussina vs. Schilling

Chacon vs. Wakefield

Karen and I will be attending the second game (and this time bringing sandwiches!) and I’m really looking forward to catching the self proclaimed legend that is Curt Schilling in person. Johnson and Beckett have been somewhat erratic as of late but you have to expect them both to step it up. Beckett’s making his first visit since his amazing performance in the 2003 World Series and as usual, will be more than fired up. Sadly Gary Sheffield (my best bet to want to kock Beckett’s teeth out after an over exhuberant strikeout) will probably iss the series and maybe even go on the DL. One has to hope that Sheffield doesn’t “shut it down” to protect his wrist/extort a contract extension from the Yankees.

Anyway, here’s to a well played series and someone leaving New York with sole possession of first place and by “someone” I mean the Yankees.

In the Dark Predictions:

Game 1: Yanks 7, Sox 6
Game 2: Yanks 4, Sox 2
Game 3: Sox 6, Yanks 2

ps: Here’s a quick shot of Pedro to help you remember the good ol’ days when he was a huge part of this rivalry.

my gut reaction to that guy’s jacket make me like it b/c it looked more boston-y than NY (plus the guy is wearing it in NY), plus it looks very much like a boston celtics jacket at first glance (up until the early 90s, the boston celtics were the #1 team in boston, they’re sadly a distant third now, but then again, so is basketball). now that i’ve suffered the cognitive dissonance of the “boston yanks” image a few times, i share in alex’s sentiment, this is bullshit.

so onto the series, i have band rehearsals tues, wed, and thurs night. not awesome. i’m not the kind of guy to tivo’s sports, but i think i’m going for it tonight, the question is do i become that guy that yells at his friends for inadvertantly telling him the score, responding with “awwww, duuuude, i was tivo-ing that game, thanks for ruining it! waaaah!” anyway, i’m giving it a try tonight - catch a few innings of beckett, a few innings of the unit, and hopefully one flawless inning of papelbon - so, don’t tell me the score! WAH!

couldn’t agree more w/ alex, i feel like the beckett/sheffield script has already been written, and frankly, i can’t wait, especially after seeing YES replay the pedro/clemens/zimmer game in the 2003 ALCS yesterday - of course following some derek jeter/joe torre fellatio, YESrospective, or some stupid play on words w/ the word YES or YANKEE in it, blech, what was i DOING on that channel??

so predictions for this series? our default answer for most of our games, is that they will be decided by the bullpen. hard to say that today, despite some RJ trouble lately, he killed us last year (5-0 against the sox), and seems to step it up against us whatever his last start was. beckett has been a little crazy lately, so i think tonight will be a big test for him. as has been written about today, when he pitched out of his head in game 6 in the 2003 world series in yankee stadium (to coin a bill simmons term) he was playing w/ the house’s money - playing on florida (where there is very little expectation), on 3 days rest against a monster yankees line-up, and at yankee stadium - and he pitched nearly flawlessly. hard to imagine that the pressure is bigger during a may series than a world championship clinching game, but that’s the bizzare beauty of sox/yanks.

    anyway, predictions:

    sox take tonight: 5-4
yanks tomorrow (for alex & karen): 6-2
    sox take thurs: 5-1

    enjoy!

i’m going out on a limb and calling the 3 day sox sweep.

    tonight: 7-3
    tomorrow: 6-1
    thursday: 4-2

and i love that jacket. i’m going to get you one for your wedding present

okay, here we stand on the heels of game 2 of the series. the standings:

    Gabe: 2-0
    Alex: 1-1
    Manlio 1-1

i’ve heard through the grapevine that alex and manlio, recently enlightened by their new, fancy stat book, Baseball Between The Numbers that “gabe needs more stats in his baseball.” Well, I’m calling you out, I will not only beat you both in fantasy this year, I will predict more baseball game outcomes - with or without your little baseball bible (and yes, i still want to read it).

onto a more frustrating subject - game 3 of the series tonight: as usual, it works out like the last two games never happened. on a side note: i HATE it when we blow out the yankees, i feel like it’s an automatic loss the next game. we never seem to blow them out on a game 3 of a series. (and yes, if you were wondering i will refer to the red sox as “we” throughout the comment sections of this blog.)

wake / chacon tonight. chacon’s been hit or miss lately as has wake, but i think wake has his confidence back w/ mirabelli fielding his knuckles (comment on that as you will).

i stick w/ my original call: 5-1 Sox

Shawn Chacon “hit or miss”? He’s 4-1 w/ a 3.94 ERA and hasn’t given up more than 1ER in a start since April 22th (3 starts) or in a game since April 12th (2 relief appearances). Sadly, after Mussina, he’s our best starter this year. Recognize! Now if its Hit or Miss you’re looking for, look no further.

alex made a good point, “hit or miss” wasn’t exactly right for chacon, it’s been more “miss, hit”. but let’s talk stats:

chacon vs the sox: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/bvsp?playerId=4702 (low AB totals)

    wake vs the yanks: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/bvsp?playerId=2748

gotta give the advantage to wake tonight, but jeter’s the guy to look out for against him.

and you know what goes unsaid in the shadow of yankee-killer david ortiz? sox-killer…wait for it…robinson cano, he’s batting .396 against boston pitching - .396!!! pitch around him!

    It’s a retro-replica jacket.

The Boston Yanks played in the NFL for a few years in the 1940s.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. I think I still can’t help but hate on it a little bit. The Pavlovian response to those words might just be too strong. :)
