Who’s got their money on Deputy Glitters?

Saturday morning started early with a trip to Prospect Park with Karen and Sasha for early morning off-leash hours. Prospect Park in the mornings is like a dog wonderland - hundreds of dogs freely running around, playing, swimming, etc… (now that I see that written out, it sounds like Dennis’ worst nightmare) Afterwards we returned home for some eggs and toast - mmm.

Later in the afternoon, Karen and I drove over to Park Slope to hand over our yearly $50 to the kind folks at the totally not depressing OTB. After negotiating the not-so-easy to use Automated Betting Tellers (Kevin, where were you? At the damn Derby itself, that’s where!) we headed back to our neighborhood to Floyd to celebrate the Derby. For the record, we bet on the following horses:

Karen: Sweetnorthernsaint + Sharp Humor

Alex: Lawyer Ron + Sinister Minister + Cause to Believe

* Now I have nothing against being gay or gay horses. I merely want to point out that you would be hard pressed to find a stereotypically gayer horse name than “Deputy Glitters”. The end.

Intently Watching

Being from Kentucky, the guys at Floyd really decked out the place. It really felt like an “event” and it was more crowded than I’dWe met Sara and Katie there and we waited for Karen’s friend Laura (from D.C.) to meet us there. There was some free food highlighted by breakfast sausage patties, ham salad sandwich (more delicious than you’d expect) and some super sweet (as in sugar, not as in “dude!”) pecan pies. The folks at Floyd also went around with a bucket with vouchers for all the horses in the race and you could buy one for $5 on the spot, thereby allowing the folks who couldn’t make it to OTB to get in on the action - way to get everyone involved, Foyd!

Sara and Karen

After my customary mint julep - despite going for just one rather than the usual two from year’s past, it still managed to “do the trick” - I was on my way. Soon after, Katie came forward with the best idea of the day, suggesting we go for a bucket of beer rather than constantly returning to the bar to brave the holiday lines. $12 buys you an iced bucket of canned delicacies suck as Stroh’s, Spiel’s, Miller High Life (”The Champagne of Beer”, as we all know) and other’s that are slipping my mind now.

Bucket O' Beer

Karen’s friend finally showed up and was able to celebrate the Kentucky Derby with us and our crappy delicious beers. Karen stepped out for a bit and Laura, having never met me before, initiated one of the most succinct “tell me about yourself” sessions I’ve ever been involved with. It was a trip down memory lane for me - starting with growing up in the city with my mom all the way to why I tend to drink too much during the Kentucky Derby.

The Spread

After an uneventful race won by Barbaro by the largest margin in 50 years (Sinister Minister was right up there until the last turn and then seemed to literally dissappear) all of our horses were scolded and we moved onto the bocce court for a few drunken games of bocce. At this point we decided it was time to eat so we headed over to Cody’s for some late-night (it actually probably wasn’t *that* late - it felt like 2 am in Julep Time, though it was more likely 10:30 or so). Karen made a pit stop at home to get her Neti Pot on (allergies were kicking up a storm) and we met up at Cody’s where newly engaged Jill + Steve and their friends were having some drinks.

It is at this point where we slowed up the boozing as it started to get a little fuzzy. Some say Cody’s has the best mussels in the neighborhood. I am often one of those people. Never forget to eat the 3-4 slices of french bread at the bottom of the bowl, for they have been bathing in the garlic sauce and become a bizarre combination of crispy and soggy that is a delight to consume. After finishing up the meal, Karen and I walked Laura to a taxi and bid her fairwell. This was not before she told us that her fiancee didn’t make it up to NY this weekend because they have a lot of things going on in the next few weeks and that stresses him out a bit so he wanted to keep this weekend as free time for himself. I cannot express how good it felt to hear about someone who has the same neuroses as I do when it comes to scheduling and time management.

We set her up with a taxi and Karen and I headed hom to walk Sash and then hit the sack.
