Dinner, Drinks and Air Guitars

Date May 6, 2006 by alex

Friday night Karen and I met up with Gabe and Carin for dinner, drinks and a movie (Air Guitar Nation screening @ the Tribeca Film Festival) We arrived at Three of Cups for dinner around 8pm and Gabe and Carin had already secured a table outside - very well done as it was a beautiful night out. We ate really delicious Italian food and had some wine + sangria. The standouts were: the table bread - freshly baked bread with rosemary (who woulda thought the #1 standout would be the free bread?), Gabe’s Cavatelli w/ Sausage in a light brown sauce and karen’s home made ravioli. The tiramisu and fresh gelato also represented later in the evening.

After dinner we stopped by Edge Bar (a.k.a. “Blackout Central”) for a couple of quick drinks and then headed down to Tribeca to catch the midnight showing of Air Guitar Nation. We’d hoped to arrive there early enough to grab a drink at the neighboring Applebee’s but our good intentions were thrwarted by what must’ve been the worst cab driver we could have gotten - it was as though he were profiting by keeping us in the cab longer. Wait a minute…! We finally arrived just in time for the movie. Sorry, Applebee’s, maybe we’ll visit with you some other time, though I honestly have to say that it’s probably not likely. The movie went off without a hitch and was followed up by a quick Q+A session with film’s producer and main protagonists. Naturally, this created an opportunity for people to hear themselves speak so we were blessed one woman’s who’s relentless stupidity actually incited boos from the crowd. Who the hell gets boo’ed at a 2 am Q+A session!? After that, we said hi to Dennis and Youngna and friends (also at the movie) and we headed home for the night.

during our cab ride to the theater, the a-wipe driver was on his cell phone the WHOLE time. this has gotten out of hand, i was in the front seat and instinctually felt bad for interrupting his conversation to confirm he knew where he was going. so i called alex who was in the back w/ the Karens (or Carins if my girlfriend is reading), and talked trash about the cabbie for a while, which of course the cabbie was totally oblivious to.

the issue is that any cab driver can chat away on his damn cell phone and just go in the general direction of your destination. traffic? bad route? bridge is closed? feel like taking the cobble stone street to get there? who cares? he doesn’t have anywhere to get to and the friggin meter’s running. and on top of it, i tipped him! why do i DO that?

anyway, that and the self-important momo’s that asked questions during the Air Guitar Q&A were the only downfalls. the rest was minty sweet. Air Guitar Nation was really fun. thanks A&G!
