Yankees and Red Sox in 2006 PM

Date May 1, 2006 by alex

The PM stands for “Post Manlio”. This is a big week in local sports - the Yankees and Red Sox open their first series of the season this evening. I also marks Johnny Damon’s return to Fenway Park. It is these kinds of weeks that are always fun to get riled up for and debate various incredible serious baseball issues with Manlio and Gabe. Unfortunately, today marks the first day of a Mnalio-less New York City so we’re going to have to take our jawing at each other onto the Information Superhighway.

What also seems fitting is that the Yankees evened themselves up with the Sox yesterday with a pretty win over the Blue Jays so they head up I-95 in a virtual tie for 1st place with the Red Sox - could it be any other way? This will be a short 2 game set that will more than likely be dominated by the Johnny Damon media/fan circus - I love that he will be the first person to bat in this series so we’ll be able to see the crowd’s reaction before anything is at stake - my bet is the fact that he comes up at the beginning of a 0-0 game will make it easier for the cheers to drown out the boos (and there will be boos).

In the first game we send out Wang against a familiar Tim Wakefield and Tuesday we send Chacon against the pride of the Sox offseason, Josh Beckett who’ll be trying to bounce back from 1 mediocre start and one abysmal start in Cleveland last week. A few weeks ago I pondered the over-under on when Beckett’s unbridled enthusiasm (after striking guys out, etc…) that sometimes borders on showing people up will cause the benches to clear - let’s see how it goes on Tuesday. The Yanks will most likely be without Sheffield which sucks but it allows Torre to move Giambi up to the 3 hole which I think might prove to be a good place for him and his ability to get on base. Hopefully we’ll get some great baseball to ring in the second month of the baseball season and no brawling (I’m looking at you, Julian Tavarez, Josh Beckett and Kyle Farnsworth!).

Fyi, we play each other 12 times between now and June 8th - big month here, boys!

to be fair, the majority of our baseball barbs come over the internet anyways, so this shouldn’t be a huge huge change.

i think giambi in the 3 hole makes a lot of sense. it gets the L-R-L-R thing in order. But it’s a good problem to have, when you guys have too many sluggers and stuff…
